继41岁的路易斯安那州当选国会议员莱特洛(Luke Letlow)因感染新冠去世后，新年之后，美国又连续两名州议员去世。包括60岁的弗吉尼亚州参议员查芬（Ben Chafin Jr.）和42岁的宾夕法尼亚州众议员里斯（Mike Reese）。
弗吉尼亚州参议员查芬于1月1日因新冠并发症去世，养牛场主和律师出身的他曾是弗吉尼亚州第38区参议员，于2013年当选。
弗吉尼亚州州长诺瑟姆（Ralph Northam）下令弗吉尼亚州政府大厦以降半旗的形式表示哀悼。
根据查芬办公室介绍，“查芬是宪法第二修正案，数十万低收入弗吉尼亚人经济发展和医疗保健的坚定支持者”。

42岁的宾夕法尼亚州众议员里斯于1月2日下午因脑动脉瘤去世，他在去年12月曾感染新冠，一直隔离至恢复。
里斯于去年11月竞选第七届连任成功，他被选为担任2020年至2021年宾夕法尼亚州众议院共和党团领袖。
里斯代表宾夕法尼亚州第59区，宾夕法尼亚州众议院多数党领袖本宁霍夫（Kerry Benninghoff）发布声明表示哀悼，称里斯是“一个模范立法者，深思熟虑地将选民放在首位。”
当地媒体报道指出，里斯曾于去年12月初感染新冠病毒，他当时在声明中表示，“我的症状很轻，一直在隔离，直到恢复为止，症状在消退，我感觉越来越好。”

在此之前，路易斯安那州新当选国会众议员莱特洛（Luke Letlow）于2020年12月29日因感染新冠病毒过世，享年41岁。
莱特洛曾在12月18日宣布，他的新冠检测呈阳性，随后他进行隔离。在12月21日，他到医院接受治疗，后病情恶化，并于29日去世。
